Delhi Capitals are delighted to welcome Matthew Mott as their Assistant Coach for the highly anticipated 2025 season of the Indian Premier League. The former Australian left-handed batter will join the Capitals' support staff that includes Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao, Head Coach Hemang Badani, and Bowling Coach Munaf Patel.
Mott, 52, represented Queensland and Victoria in the Australian domestic circuit for more than a decade before kick-starting his highly decorated coaching career in 2007. After two successful domestic coaching stints, first with New South Wales from 2007 to 2011, and then at Glamorgan County Cricket Club from 2011 to 2013, Mott was appointed as the Head Coach of the Australian Women's Cricket Team in 2015. That was the start of a record-breaking seven-year period for Mott's Australia.
He led them to two T20 World Cup titles in 2018 and 2020, one ODI World Cup in 2022, four Ashes series wins, and a remarkable record 26-match winning streak in ODIs. Mott then brought his attacking yet sensible brand of cricket to the England Men's white-ball team as their Head Coach from 2022 to 2024, leading them to their second T20 World Cup triumph in 2022.
Looking forward to his stint with the franchise, Mott said, “This is an incredibly exciting time to join the Delhi Capitals and be part of the fantastic coaching unit the franchise has assembled. The squad is a great blend of experience and youth, and I’m eager to link up with Venu and Hemang to get things underway.”
“Returning to the IPL after some time makes this challenge even more intriguing. We have a team brimming with potential, and it’s all about channeling that talent in the right way to achieve success both on and off the field. I’m looking forward to working closely with the players, the coaching staff, and delivering the results we all aspire to,” he added.
Commenting on the prospect of experiencing Delhi and the country, the Australian added, “It’s also fantastic to be back in India—a place that has such a deep passion for cricket. The energy, the fans, and the cricketing culture here are truly special, and I’ve always enjoyed my time in this country. I can’t wait to experience that atmosphere again and contribute to what promises to be a thrilling season.”
Mott marks his return to the IPL having also coached the Kolkata-based franchise in the past, and will hope to boost the Capitals' chances of success this season with his extensive coaching background and a proven track record.
